The NES emulation community has agreed by necessity to number and name the different hardware mappers contained in NES cartridges. Numbering them proved to be inadequate for several reasons, including running out of numbers (256 maximum allowed by the iNES format). The UNIF format (Unified ROM format) uses names instead of numbers. Some NES games, especially certain multicarts from Hong Kong, can not be properly stored in a format that uses mapper numbers and must be stored in a .unif file with a named mapper.
